Lincoln Conservation Group:

Whisby Nature Reserve, 1st March 2009

Hedges are a vital source of food and habitat for wildlife and the area in need of restoration is part of the county boundaries.  500 whips, bamboo canes and rabbit guards were bought by the reserve, the majority of plants were hawthorns but some elms were also added as Phil Porter, the reserve manager, wants to see the types of insects that may be interested with this habitat.

A very good turn out with plenty of new blood… which meant that the 500 whips were planted in no time at all. Sadly, the work force had a life and the majority left after lunch (nothing personal) which left Dave, Richard and myself to water the newly planted hedge.  Still, the day was very good, the weather was mild and slightly overcast which made working outside very pleasant.

Phil was very pleased with the results.  Over all, the day ended with a feel good factor of having achieved the planting and personally I’m just looking forward to see this new hedge maturing.

Special thanks to Tiger for being our photographer for the day. Well, at least I had remembered the milk…. you just can’t have it all!
