Lincoln Conservation Group:

Swanholme Lakes, 21st October 2007

This task gave us an opportunity to brush up on our tree felling skills and provided valuable training for the new group volunteers.  David Rogers from BTCV led the task and provided the training.

We worked on an area of the Swanholme lakes nature reserve in Lincoln and the task was to cut down invasive trees to open out the area for the benefit of the heather and ground lichen that is abundant in the area

It was a lovely sunny day and the work progressed rapidly with the good turnout we got.  Despite a recently imposed tree preservation order preventing the felling of larger trees, we soon had trees falling in all directions as we practiced our tree felling skills.

The felled trees were cut up and used to build a dead hedge to enclose the area and to try and hold back the ever encroaching Rhodies that form a high wall around the area.

All in all, it was a very successful and enjoyable day.  Thanks very much to David for providing the useful training and refresher course for new and experienced volunteers alike.
