Lincoln Conservation Group:

Southrey Wood, 4th November 2007

A welcome return to Southrey Wood, near Bardney, to help Butterfly Conservation with their on going work on this coppice woodland.  The traditional coppice rotation is being continued, to benefit the diverse variety of wildlife, including butterflies, that benefit from this age old management of woodland habitat.

We had another excellent turnout and we rapidly cleared a large area of this years coup, cutting the stools back, being careful to cut the stems at an angle and avoiding damaging the bark, to ensure good regrowth.

Two large bonfires ensured we were able to clear away most of the cut material, with a few habitat piles being created from some of the larger sections.  It's a shame that the cut material isn't used for traditional coppice crafts any more as there was some excellent material produced.
