Southrey Wood, 18th January 2009
The task this Sunday was to help Butterfly Conservation with the on going
coppicing in Southrey Wood, south of Bardney. Each year a new section
of coppice woodland is cut down to continue the coppice rotation that many
species of wildlife, particularly butterflies, take advantage of and, in
some cases, depend on.
The weather was kind to us and provided a lovely sunny day in between the
wind and rain of the night before and the Monday. Much of the coup had
already been cut, so we set about extending the cut area and feeding the
large bonfire. Lots of the wood was taken back to various cars for the
ever popular home wood burners and some of the cut hazel was put to one side
for possible use in coppice crafts. The rest was burnt to keep us
warm.
We managed to fell a sizeable section, but there was still plenty for the BC
volunteers to keep at for the rest of the season.
