Lincoln Conservation Group:  Task Report

Bridge Farm, Snitterby, Sunday 17th December 2006

Purpose of the visit:
To coppice a hedge that had been heavily damaged by goats and replanting of the hedge to regenerate a wildlife corridor.

Bridge farm is situated in Snitterby between Market Rasen and Gainsborough, the lovely owner Patty produces organic goat’s cheese with the Golden Guernsey goats. We had a rather good turn out (around 20) and the weather that all week had been cold and miserable turned out to be cold but with a glorious sunshine what more could we have asked.

After the brief introduction and tool safety we cracked on with the prickly job of cutting the hedge. I must said that I thought it was rather daunting when we first started as you had to fight until you got most of the bottom branches out before you could do any sawing. During the morning the majority of us hacked away (what we do best!!!) while a small group started to gather the material for a bomb fire. By lunch time Patty offered some hot soup which was really welcomed but the best was that we got to eat inside a warm home and not on a plastic bag in the cold (call me snob but you can’t beat a nice sofa). That must have been the highlight for me, as I don’t actually remember much of the afternoon amazing as the time flies when you enjoy yourself.

The job got finished on time and on the spot where previously had bear an over grown hedge was now a small line of newly planted shrubs surrounded by many stumps. I had a great day there would definitely go back to the farm to do volunteering.
