Scotgrove Woods, 16th March 2008

The 3rd and final visit to this Lincolnshire Limewood near Bardney for this winter. The weather didn't seem too promising to begin with, with strong winds and steady rain.  Fortunately it gave that up soon after we ventured from the cars and turned into a cold but pleasant enough day.

The work continued apace with 15 of us continuing to cut and widen scallops into the side of the woodland along the main entrance track.  Richard had visited the day before and marked up suitable trees for demolition, so it was a case of seeking out the white, or yellow, paint blobs and removing those so afflicted.

John Fleming made an excellent job of starting a fire in a pile of sodden ash and we were soon feeding it with the cut material soon after a morning tea break. The overnight rain had filled the ditches with water, which made for an interesting challenge dragging cut material to the fire.

By the end of the day, further progress had been made in opening up the ride and exposing good sized verges for woodland plants to colonise free from overhanging trees.  Hopefully we will be returning to this site come the autumn.

As you can see, I got a bit bored taking the usual work style photos!
