Lincoln Conservation Group:

 Sam's Garden, 30 October 2011

This was one of our 'extra' fund raising tasks and to help Sam Wharden create a bee friendly garden at his home in Bracebridge Heath. Jude had designed the garden layout and gathered a wide selection of plants that bees will be attracted to. A large pile of 'green waste' compost had also been delivered ready to enrich the shallow topsoil.

Twelve of us turned up to start the digging. Jude, along with Ian's help, had laid out lines of string in advance to show where the beds should be dug.  A shallow lying internet cable meant we had to dig carefully in certain areas, but we quickly got the top layer of rank grass lifted and relocated under the hedge to rot down.  The underlying sandy soil was then covered in compost and dug in.

For lunch, Sam and his partner had prepared a very enjoyable vegetarian feast which we rapidly polished off. Then it was back to work to plant the various plants that Jude laid out in strategic locations. With 12 of us, we managed to get the whole project completed well within time, although there was a lot of compost left, which will have to be relocated at some stage.

Thanks to Sam for the excellent lunch and also for the generous donation to group funds.
