Lincoln Conservation Group:

Saltfleetby / Theedlethorpe National Nature Reserve, (Natural England), 5th August 2007

The day promised to be one of the hottest of the year so far, so the thought of a heavy duty conservation task did not hold much appeal.  Fortunately for us, there was nothing heavy duty about the work on offer.

Thirteen of us arrived at the Natural England shed near the Seaview car park and set to work loading bails of recently cut hay onto the back of 2 trailers.  We cleared one field in under an hour and, after offloading it again onto pallets at the storage area, we set off for a spot of Natterjack toad hunting at a nearby pond. John, the warden, soon found several to show us at the protected and well hidden pond.

After lunch, basking under the clear skies and cooled by a welcome sea breeze, we collected another field of hay bails and stored them in the nearby barn.

It was all over by 2.30, John was very happy as we had achieved in a couple of hours what would have taken him & Rob 7 or 8 on his own.

As it was too nice to head straight back to the heat of the city, we wandered down to the sea for a paddle and then headed home, some of us via a tea shop at Wragby.  A perfect task for a hot summers day.
