It is six months since we worked at this lovely little reserve in North
Hykeham, which offers a walk of just a mile around the lake formed from old
gravel workings, and the trees and grass seem to have grown quite a lot.
Nine of us gathered on a mainly overcast but warm day. We were delighted to welcome two new people to the group.
We continued the work we have done on two previous workdays, removing the tree guards which were put round the young trees when first planted, to protect them. We only found one mouse nest this time! We have now managed to remove most of the guards, which is good news.
Sadly, though many people use the reserve, not everyone is considerate in
clearing up the mess created by their dogs, and it was sad to see dog mess
left right by the picnic tables, which are a great facility in a local
reserve like this.
We hope to be able to focus more on woodland management whenever we next visit this reserve, to ensure that the trees do not become overcrowded and the habitat suits the waterbirds and other wildlife.
