Kirkstead Mill, 25th April 2010

A welcome return to Kirkstead Old Mill on the banks of the river Witham, where we have helped Barbara and Tony develop their wildlife garden over the years.  The weather started dull and wet but fortunately, cleared before we started work and turned into a warm, sunny day.

Nineteen of us turned out, including 8 new volunteers. There was plenty of work to keep us all busy.  We cleared brambles from along the edges of the stream, ready to be planted with other plants and an area where bulbs are being shaded out. Barbara and her helper provided a tasty lunch and refreshments to keep us going.

After lunch some of us returned to the area which we had cleared on the last visit to plant buddleias and daffodils, forming a memorial garden for Tony, who sadly passed away recently.  The soil was heavy clay, spoil from when the new pumping station on the Witham was installed. To help the plants,  we mixed in some sand and good soil to improve the texture.  Each buddleia was then surrounded by daffodil bulbs.

Barbara has been in touch to say that she is very pleased with the work and that the plants are being watered daily.
