Lincoln Conservation Group:

Hartsholme Country Park, 11th May 2008

This Sunday's task was a leisurely stroll round Hartsholme, seeking out litter and bagging it up.  The weather was fantastic, bringing out the good citizens of Lincoln to sunbathe, picnic and litter.  There was only 4 of us, but that was a comfortable number to work our way across Hartsholme and into Swanholme, collecting several bags of rubbish and dragging a useful shopping trolley out of a lake in which to carry it all. One lake, with a picturesque sandy beach, had clearly been the scene of a jolly family picnic judging by the piles of beer cans, food wrappers and babies nappies littering the beach. We radioed back to base to ask Ruth, the Warden, to collect our mornings picking and then headed back to the visitors centre to join the ice cream munching masses for lunch.

For the afternoon, we drove over to Birchwood Nature Park for another litter pick.  This site has a team who regularly sweeps the main paths for litter, but a trip deeper into the surrounding woodland yielded about 9 more bags of rubbish including the remains of lawnmowers, cloths and bottles and cans galore!

All in all, a rewarding enough excuse for a day out in the sunshine!
