Far Ings National Nature Reserve,
21st September 2008
This Sunday, we set off to the Humber estuary, in the shadow of the Humber
bridge, to help clear the beaches of litter. We arrived at 10am, but
the timing wasn't brilliant as the tide was in. So we spent the
morning concentrating on the wooded area on the reserve. This
generated bags of cans, plastic bottles and the usual detritus of
thoughtless human existence, including a computer, or at least its casing,
from the nearby hotel.
When that area was clear, we headed back to the new LWT study centre for an
extended tea/lunch break and spent a pleasant hour or so in the sun eating
our sandwiches and watching the many visitors grappling with the decidedly
unstable picnic tables.
The afternoon was spent along the estuary shoreline collecting what little
rubbish the Humber had decided to offload for that day. Much of it
seemed to be found in small gathering places where local miscreants had been
gathering. We also dragged out piles from the previous litter
gathering exercise.
All in all, it was quite a gentle task, with clear skies and warm sunshine
to make it a very pleasant experience.
