Chambers Farm Wood, 28th December 2008
The traditional post Christmas task at Chambers Farm Wood was a chance to
burn off some of the excesses of Christmas. The work was coppicing to open
up the edge of a ride making it more attractive to wildlife, particularly
the butterflies that are being managed for by Butterfly Conservation in this
woodland.
It was a cold but dry day, although it took a while to dry out the available
material to get a fire going and the ride we were working in gradually
turned into a bog underfoot as we dragged material to the fire site.
We
worked on two scallops on the edge of the woodland and managed to clear most
of it by the end of the day. To keep us going, there were a good
selection of treats to accompany the tea breaks; mince pies, chocolate etc,
many left over from Christmas (and rather negating our efforts to burn off
the excess calories, oh well!).
