Lincoln Conservation Group:

Lincolnshire Limestone Grassland Project (Ancaster Valley), 15th August 2010

This task was a gentle stroll in the peaceful limestone grassland valley near Ancaster.  The aim was to gather a store of wild flower seeds that could be redistributed along the roadside verges in the area, part of the Life on the Verge survey.

The project officer, Mark Schofield, gave us some training in plant identification and then the 8 of us set about gathering as many seed pods as we could find, including cowslips, yellow rattle, meadow and small scabious, birdsfoot trefoil plus a selection of grasses.

Fortunately the weather was warm and largely sunny, so the day was spent studying the insect and plant life while filling our collection bags. By the end of the afternon we had 2 large sacks of seeds and associated pods ready for redistribution, by Mark, along the verges.
